Synopsis

One of the first Super Robot manga and the one that introduced most of the traits of the Mecha genre. Constructed with the Super-Alloy Z, Mazinger was built by Professor Juzo Kabuto as a weapon against the Mechanical Beasts of the evil Dr. Hell. Koji Kabuto, the grandson of Professor Kabuto, becomes the pilot of Mazinger Z when his grandfather is killed, and battles from there on against Dr. Hell and his allies. This is the first series that introduced the concept of a pilot inside a Mecha, which all series from then on have followed.

The most important thing to say about this manga is it sort of thinks of itself as a companion-work to its anime, which was being released at the same time. Occasionally things appear that the anime fans would have been familiar with but are unexplained within the manga itself.

That said, it's an excellent, short way to dip into the Mazinger franchise and still manages to give a good grasp of the main cast and main villains, some of the highlights of their adventures, and the beginning-to-ending trajectory of the central Kabuto Kouji-vs-Dr. Hell story. It also has the excellent advantage of not needing to ...

Mazinger Z is a simple, yet bizarre and interesting manga, where Go Nagai's ability to clearly tell is a story is on full display, even if the overarching story is a little flat. His visuals are very clear, and many of the ideas in the manga are quite interesting, even if variations can be found elsewhere. There is little to really hold your imagination on this five volume manga alone, but the simplicity of the manga is also a strength as it is quit easy to read.

The major flaw is that most of the characters lack real development, and at times feel a bit ...

Mixed Feelings
Go Nagai decided the world needed robots with breasts, headless cyborg Nazis, and villains who cackled about hating humanity between sips of evil-juice. Mazinger Z is a manga where plot depth is conspicuously absent, but the thrill of a teen shouting “Rocket Punch!” as skyscrapers crumble under robo-fist chaos makes up for it. Here, women—though vaguely competent—are either damsels or walking (underage) weapon racks with missiles strategically placed, because what better way to pioneer the mecha genre than sexualizing even the robots?

The story loops through carnage: villains scheme for the sake of scheming, sidekicks cheerlead like unpaid interns, and protagonist Koji Kabuto solves every problem ...
