if you wonder what the discrepancy between the art quality of this piece and the low-ish score is born from, it’s probably because the one shots this thing is constructed of feel like they end before developing or exploring their concepts or mysteries fully. it feels intentional and works well with some of them, forcing you to actually interact and consider the themes, but leaves others a bit hollow and pretentious.
especially the ones where the theme of nature and humanity’s connection gets explored through young girl impregnation fetish.
but this reviews is your push to read it, it is worth it in my opinion. i’d recommend
...
it.
this comic achieves what most ecology themed stories fail to, which is going deep and abstract enough to hit the philosophical and biological questions that actually make you deconstruct your ideas aound humanity’s relation to nature and animals. explores concepts like the overpower of nature and includes one of the most immersing attempts at guessing what it feels like to be a flower or an animal. the title alone tells that Igarashi has done the reading.
the grandmother story will stay with me for a long while, it’s definitely one of those exemplary works of comic art. powerful metaphor and simultaneously so comforting. :,,,,)
