Mieruko-chan

Miko Yotsuya's eyes water as she fixates on a single spot on her phone—she ignores yet another dreadful, horrific monster that is in her face, uttering the disturbing words: "Can you see me?" Before now, Miko enjoyed her unassuming high school days, with late-night horror shows serving only as a form of entertainment. But ever since one fateful day, she is the only person aware of the invisible monsters walking freely among humans.

Courageously, Miko makes a bold decision: she will never, under any condition, acknowledge the presence of the horrid specters. However, even though she pretends they do not exist, she can still see how they disturb the people around her, especially her best friend, the energetic and lovely Hana Yurikawa. In order to protect them from the monsters' annoyances, Miko gives it her best to continue her school life and avoid every troublesome crisis—even when they scare her to tears.

Mieruko-chan is a comedic-slice of life series with hints of horror, al though having "creatures" all over the place it is more focused precisely on 3 main characters, the protagonist and friends. Each episode brings the constant struggle the protagonist has to deal with while keeping the ability to perceive such monsters a secret. Some circumstances are wholesome and get very deep in lore regarding certain characters. Many of the interactions and situations are funny, making it less heavy for people who might want to enjoy soft horror, to put it into perspective.


The opening doesn't has heavy visual spoilers which is good if you ... like you enjoy it or are having a bad time skipping. It is more a symbolic visual. The ending on the other hand, does have spoilers from characters or details that will be shown ahead. Not the best songs ever, personally but still catchy and in mood for this kind of series. Comedic-horror based. Make sure to stay after the ending as it always give extra content or context from the episode. It can always give you a laugh or two.

Good animation, acting and storytelling, even if it looks simple, it does it's job. Good plot twists that you might not expect. Overall, a good series to enjoy alone or with company!

Mixed Feelings

I'm just going to jump into the good and bad with this show. Let's start with the good.

- MC isn't an anime trope. She actually has a unique personality and mannerism that make it difficult to add the word "dere" to. She's kind of an everyman (or in this case woman). I like it.
- Some of the episodic stories presented are decent enough that I wish the author expanded on it.
- Even though I had issues with it, it wasn't boring while watching it and kept me engaged.
- The art of the ghosts was excellent and really helped sell the show. ...

Okay now the bad.

- The stories generally come in 1 of 2 flavours. You have the story of the MC seeing a ghost, fearing said ghost and getting away from said ghost or you have a MC seeing ghost, ghost wants something, ghost achieves what it wants, ghost goes away. It gets repetitive
- The show lacks stakes, and this is major flaw. Ghosts seem to be generally harmless physically towards humans, and there is an episode where the MC physically interacts with one and comes out unscathed. Why is she then still afraid of them? The anime can only imply that something *could* happen, which makes everything seem pointless. I thought the show going in would be her bored about seeing ghosts every day and trying to live a normal life. I think after a week of seeing this things you'd be more annoyed than afraid. If the ghosts themselves aren't the stakes, then add a male love interest who she is afraid of looking crazy to. Something really.
- There are some inconsistencies. If someone has a ghost repelling aura, why did a ghost physically touch them? If someone else can see the spirits, why don't they harm them like the MC fears?
- The best friend is annoying and has 2 defining traits. She likes to eat food, and she's ditzy. Her brother is also kind of weird.
- The conclusion was a cliff hanger, and not a satisfying one like an unresolved side plot, but the logical conclusion that's hinted at in a dream sequence. You shouldn't leave the conclusion for the sequel! It would be like ending Return of the Jedi in the middle of Luke's fight with Vader.
- The only comedy is derived from the pig tails character having misunderstandings with the MC, and is more comedic relief than a true comedy.

All in all, I give it a 4. There are some major flaws with it, but if you take it for what it is, it's entertaining if you don't think too much about it. If you're looking for a story that makes sense, with characters you'll add to your favourites and will have you laughing or dreading, this isn't it for you. It's the definition of a "turn your brain off" show, if you do that you'll have a decent time.

as a spiritist, upon watching the trailer, i believed that this anime would explain mediumship well and even help people who also see spirits. but apparently...

(and unfortunately)

the fan service spoke louder, which is pretty ridiculous and disrespectful to the religion.

(trying not to mention that the protagonist and the supporting characters are minors).

simply pathetic!

... on the other hand, the plot twists are a strong point – maybe the only truly positive thing that saves the anime.

if the reviews are considered by the studio, then here’s a suggestion to save the anime: focus more on plot twists and backstories!

or just don’t make a second season.
